What Do I Buy?

When you think about home organization, do you think of those bright white homes with glass decanters of orange juice, perfectly labeled cereals, massive pantries, and insane quantities of snacks?

Surprise! (Well, probably not a surprise at all…) These are NOT the typical home by a long shot. Even my home, as a professional and full-time organizer, doesn’t look like those homes. It’s not realistic for most people and it’s often not even sustainable! I have a 3.5 year old and a husband who is a first responder. I’m often in survival mode in my home and I certainly don’t want to spend my time filling up glass canisters with laundry soap or granola. And you don’t have to!

If you want an “Insta-worthy” home, it’s 100% do-able! Just know that there are some definite costs that go into it. I have worked with clients who can sustain and maintain these homes, but primarily I work with just as amazing clients who simply want a place that is organized and still feels like their home. That. Is. My. Vibe.

So, back to the question: what do I buy to organize my home?

My two cents? Don’t buy anything. At least not yet. If you know what you need for your space, then go ahead. But the first step is to make sure that everything in that space is there to stay. [See my post about Where Do I Start?]

Once that’s done, your next task is to determine what you need. Looking for recommendations on solutions I use, love, and trust? Check here or ask me for advice on a troublesome area you’re working on. The packs of various organizers may seem tempting, but I always recommend buying products that for sure fit your space and needs instead of finding somewhere to use it later. The only exception in my eyes is for drawer organizers. You’ll almost certainly need different sizes to make sure you’re accommodating everything that belongs in that drawer while still maximizing the room available!

Did you jump to the bottom for a quick recap? Only buy what you need. Skip the multi-packs (except for drawer organizers), make sure you’ve cleared out your space first, and shop for products that actually provide a solution.
