Where Do I Start?

So you want an organized home and life, but feel overwhelmed when you think about how to get started? You’re not alone and you’re not just out of luck! The key to starting to organize, is honestly to start anywhere…

I know, that’s “easier said than done”, but I mean it. Pick a small area like one bookshelf, a desk drawer, a kitchen cabinet, take everything out of it, and take stock. Clear out any trash, set aside items that you’re fine to part with, then evaluate how you want to structure that space.

For a bookshelf, you may want to have a spot for books you want to read, books you’ve recently read, and books you like to revisit every once in a while (this is the Harry Potter and Bridgerton series for me!)… A drawer may mean testing evvvvery pen, highlighter, sharpie, etc in the drawer, clearing out used sticky notes, and then adding some organizers so things are more accessible next time… And for a cabinet, it may mean tossing old food storage containers that are spaghetti sauce stained, donating the five extra pie pans, and adding a wire shelf or divider to optimize the space better!

Some people have no problem getting started but get overwhelmed when everything is out in the open. You may even think, “what the hell did I get myself into?!”, but trust me it gets worse before it gets better! If you get to this point and think this was a wasted effort, my advice is this: clear out everything that isn’t going back into that space. If it’s trash, take it to the bin. If it’s donation, bag it and put it in your car or by your door. If it goes somewhere else, put it in a bag/box/basket for now.

Suddenly it looks a lot less overwhelming and you still have that feeling of accomplishment. If you still aren’t ready to jump back in, go ahead and rehome those items that didn’t belong or make that run to your donation center of choice!

Ready to finish up? One of the best ways to organize a space is to determine how it will be used. Frequently used items should be the most accessible. This may seem like common sense, but it isn’t always what happens when we get busy with life and just make something work temporarily. Unless you run a catering business or host events every weekend, you probably don’t need your china dishes, platters, drink dispensers, etc. on the closest shelf. You may not even need to keep them at all! If you have family and/or friends in your area that also have similar belongings, coordinate with them so that you can all share. It can be a great decluttering tool for all of you.
